Can we build the Star Trek Holodeck yet?

Speaker:  Nigel W John – Chester, United Kingdom
Topic(s):  Graphics and Computer-Aided Design

Abstract

This lecture explores the development of Virtual Reality technologies from the 1960s to the present day. The question of how close we are to achieving the Star Trek Holodeck (first introduced as an idea in the Star Trek Next Generation television series) is posed.  An advanced computer interface for all five human interfaces is needed to achieve this, and there is still some way to go! Examples of current and emerging technologies will be given, and the contents of my own Laboratory will be used as an example of what can be achieved with off-the-shelf components available today.
