Ethics and Emerging TechnologySpeaker: Sundar Vedantham – Allentown, PA, United States
Topic(s): Society and the Computing Profession
AbstractTechnology has always been looked at as a panacea for a lot of problems in the world. There is no doubt that it has improved human lives over the centuries. While luddites averse to any type of new technological development have instinctively opposed them, it is easy to understand that there are negative consequences to deployment of new technologies as well. This talk will look at the next round of computing related technological deployments that are right around the corner and push the audience to think through the kind of societal disruptions they are bound to unleash. While on the surface the positive aspects may stand out, there are several thought experiments, income disparity issues, ethical problems that we will be forced to confront. If they are not handled properly, resulting changes can obliterate all the virtues technology can bring to our society and turn the population against it. Talk will look at issues and potential solutions.
