Role of Mobile and Ubiquitous Computing in Emergency Response

Abstract

Mobile and ubiquitous computing is an emerging field of research that brings in revolutionary paradigms for computing models in the 21st century.  The goal of ubiquitous computing is to create ambient intelligence where network devices embedded in the environment provide unobtrusive connectivity and services all the time, thus improving human experience and quality of life without explicit awareness of the underlying communications and computing technologies.  In recent years, various sensing devices such as smartphones, wearables, stationary sensors, flying drones, and ground robots are becoming prevalent in our daily lives, which makes it possible to realize the vision of ubiquitous computing.  In this talk, I will illustrate how ubiquitous computing can benefit emergency response by using two specific examples: detection and tracking of amorphous events such as wildfire,  and quality-aware voice stream multicast over multi-hop low power wireless networks for effective search and rescue.  I will conclude with a brief discussion of our ongoing research projects in the areas of mobile sensing and robotics.
