AbstractThe efficient use and management of energy resources play an important role in attaining sustainable development. Today, many nations are undertaking power grid modernization initiatives, namely, smart grid transformation, to enable a seamless integration of distributed generation resources, to better match demand and supply, and to enhance the efficiency of power generation, distribution, and transmission. Such capabilities require a rich cyber control of the power grid supported by a suitably designed communications network and thus turn it into a true cyber-physical system. The interactions and interdependencies between the power grid and the supporting telecommunications network introduce numerous challenges concerning security, reliability, and robustness, which are currently not well-understood. This seminar analyses the multiscale interdependencies between these infrastructures from an adversarial perspective, and explains how to devise mechanisms to enhance robustness against failures and cyber-attacks, and how to recover from large-scale failures with no or less loss of capacity. After briefly going through fundamentals, I will present the latest results from my ongoing research. I will explain my contributions in regards to maintaining the integrity of phasor measurement unit data and silent perturbation of state estimation. The talk will explain relevant concepts, review the state-of-the-art, present representative solutions and discuss open challenges. To wrap up, I will describe the future direction of cybersecurity research applied to energy systems, and I will suggest potential avenues for collaborative research in this area.
