Abstract

Internet of Things (IoT) will enable interconnection of billions of devices and physical objects around us with the Internet. These objects will be equipped with variety of sensors to collect different types of data from them. Intelligent processing of this data by applying data analytics will provide valuable insights that will improve operations and working of various systems. Thus, IoT will be a key enabler for smart homes, smart industries, and eventually smart cities. It has numerous applications in industries such as telecommunications, automobiles, chemical, petroleum, textiles, and food. This talk starts with an introduction to IoT, Industrial IoT and Industry 4.0. The talk provides an overview of 5G as a key enabler of Industrial IoT. Furthermore, the talk will include how IoT can upgrade the existing automation in the industries by providing features such as online process control and decision making, improving productivity at a lower cost with enhanced safety, machine health monitoring and prognostics. The talk provides two use cases of Industrial IoT, the first one is the IoT based heat exchanger, and second one is the IoT based centrifugal pump. Finally, the talk will discuss some of the key challenges that need to be addressed to realize Industrial IoT in the process industry.
