Innovation at IBM -- Smarter Planet Initiative

Speaker:  Valentina Salapura – NY, United States
Topic(s):  Architecture, Embedded Systems and Electronics, Robotics

When IBM set its sights on helping to create a smarter planet two years ago, we predicted the evolution of an increasingly instrumented, intelligent and interconnected world. Intelligence is being infused into the systems and processes that make the world work—into things no one would recognize as computers: cars, appliances, roadways, power grids, clothes, even natural systems such as agriculture and waterways. Our companies, our cities and our world are complex systems that require a profound shift in management and governance. The application of technology has helped create real-world monitoring and data prediction for water systems, cities and municipalities, utilities and power grids, financial and logistics providers, and traffic and transportation entities. The next phase of smarter planet looks to build upon that progress and momentum. Leaders and citizens around the world are capturing the potential of smarter systems in numerous initiatives in attempt to solve the planet's most pressing problems, an to achieve economic growth, near-term efficiency, sustainable development and societal progress. How can these systems be optimized, adapted and reused to create increasingly intelligent modeling and data-based prediction?  The Smarter planet initiative and innovation overview takes a far-reaching view into these challenges at a global level.
