Rapid Recovery Architecture and Virtual Machine Contracts

Speaker:  Jeanna N Matthews – Potsdam, NY, United States
Topic(s):  Software Engineering and Programming

Abstract

Many seemingly innocent actions can render your personal computer unusable and the road to recovery can be painful. For example, reinstall the OS (if you know how), reinstall the applications (if you still have all the install materials) and restore personal data from a recent backup (oh you didn't save one?). What the average computer user desperately needs is an architecture focused on rapid and painless recovery. I will describe the elements of our Rapid Recovery Architecture and the pros and cons of deploying such a system on personal computers. I will also discuss the applicability of these same system elements, especially Virtual Machine Contracts, to a datacenter/cloud computing environment.
