Impact! Great Research, Great Scientists, Great Careers

Speaker:  Laura M Haas – San Jose, CA, United States
Topic(s):  Society and the Computing Profession

Abstract

I have worked with researchers in both industry and academia over the course of my career, and helped many to grow their influence and stature.  This talk is a compilation of the best advice I have received and passed on to others.  It examines what it means to be a technical leader -- what do you do, who do you influence, who do you lead?  Technical leaders are typically measured by their impact; I de-construct impact and talk about how to evaluate your own work and progress through the technical ranks.  What are the key skills you need?  What are the most common mistakes and stumbling blocks?  Along the way, I will illustrate with examples from my own career and those of other well-known, highly respected computer scientists.
