Beyond Chatbots: Building Personal, Proactive, and Purposeful AI Agents

Abstract

People click, swipe, search and in general interact with a system to accomplish a task, and yet most our systems are too focused on catering to those individual actions rather than directly addressing the tasks behind them. Recent developments in Agentic AI allows us to finally do just that—focus on tasks and create novel experiences for the users. These experiences can span multiple modalities, medias, and devices. In this talk, I will explore how seamlessly integrating multiple modalities can revolutionize the way users interact with information. By focusing on user intents, tasks, and goals, rather than the specific modalities of input, we can create personal, proactive, and purposeful agents that allow users to concentrate on their actual needs. However, such revolutionary experiences can't be created by simply building more capable systems, including sophisticated chatbots, as we have already learned from the history of agents/assistants. In order for these experiences to be meaningful and sustainable, the agents also need to be highly personalized and trustworthy. I will share some of our recent works to demonstrate how this can be achieved and what challenges remain ahead.
