Bio:
Prof. Santosh is the Chair of the Department of Computer Science (CS) at the University of South Dakota (USD). He also serves International Medical University, Malaysia as an Adjunct Professor (Full). Prior to that, he worked as a research fellow at the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM), National Institutes of Health (NIH). He worked as a postdoctoral research scientist at the LORIA research center, Universite? de Lorraine in direct collaboration with industrial partner ITESOFT, France. He also served as a research scientist at the INRIA Nancy Grand Est research center (France), where he received his PhD in Computer Science – AI. Before that, he worked as a graduate research scholar at SIIT, Thammasat University, Thailand. He completed leadership and training program for Deans/Chairs (organized by the Councils of Colleges of Arts & Sciences (U.S., 21)) and PELI – President’s Executive Leadership Institute (USD, 21).
Prof. Santosh has demonstrated expertise in AI, machine learning, pattern recognition, computer vision, image processing, data mining and big data with various applications such as healthcare informatics and medical imaging, document imaging, biometrics, forensics, speech/audio analysis, and Internet of Things. As of now (Dec 2021), he published more than 200 research works (peer-reviewed) that include journal articles (90), conference proceedings (100+), and book chapters (11, non-peer-reviewed). He authored/edited eight books (four of them were authored), 12 journal issues, and eight conference proceedings. His research projects (with $2m+) are funded by multiple agencies such as SDCRGP, State of SD, Department of Education (DOE), National Science Foundation (NSF), and Asian Office of Aerospace Research and Development (AOARD). He delivered more than 50 plenary/keynote talks at the conference/university events.
Prof. Santosh serves as an Academic Editor for PeerJ Computer Science and an Associate Editor for multiple journals such as Int. Journal of Machine Learning & Cybernetics (Springer), Advances in Computational Intelligence (Springer), and IEEE Access. He chaired more than 10 international conference events and founded four international conferences in AI, data science, and computer vision. He is the regular review panelist for research grants such as National Science Foundation (NSF, NSF-NRT, NSF-SBIR/STTR), Swiss NSF, Medical Research Council (UK), Mitacs (Canada), NSERC (Canada), University of Michigan – Precision Health, ZonMW (health research and innovation, Netherland). He also regularly reviews tier-1 journals such as The Lancet, Scientific Reports, Nature Communications, IEEE Trans. on Medical Imaging, IEEE Trans. on Computational Social Systems, Pattern Recognition, and Machine Learning Research. At USD, Prof. Santosh manages ABET (re)accreditation that includes preparation of self-study reports. He serves USD in the following capacities such as examiner/reviewer of President’s Research Excellence Award; member of Institutional Promotion & Tenure (P&T) Committee; chair of Sciences and Math Division; and vice-chair of CURCS (Undergraduate Research - USD).
To name a few, Prof. Santosh is the proud recipient of the Cutler Award for Teaching and Research Excellence (USD, 2021), the President's Research Excellence Award (USD, 2019) and the Ignite Award from the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS, 2014).
