Abstract

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is an agency of the United States Government.  NIST’s mission is to generally strengthen the U.S. economy and improve the quality of life by working with industry to develop and apply technology, measurements and standards.  Standards have a major impact on trade and is a key to innovation. Hence, our major goal is to foster and technically assist in the development of high-quality standards needed by government and industry. In the talk, I will discuss the various types of standards, focusing mainly on voluntary consensus standards, and the role that NIST plays in accelerating innovation through its work on the development, implementation, and diffusion of standards. I will show some examples of our work in cybersecurity, manufacturing and the health care IT domains.
