Smoke or mirrors: A perspective on emerging AIs
Speaker: Justin Zobel – Melbourne, VIC, AustraliaTopic(s): Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Computer Vision, Natural language processing
Abstract
AI technologies seem to be poised to disrupt a huge range of industries and activities. The abrupt rise in awareness of AI, following the appearance of publicly available generative tools exemplified by ChatGPT, has been accompanied by release of countless AI products and predictions of massive social change; and there are many fields of endeavour that are being profoundly altered by AI. However, aspects of the technology - including why it works and the extent to which it is 'intelligent' - are not agreed even by experts, while discussion of its impact are often muddied by conflation of different forms of AI, by speculative claims about AI's abilities and risks, and by lack of consideration of how it might change human behaviour.
In this lecture Prof Zobel explains mechanisms that underlie different kinds of AI, in particular generative models, and examines their potential, risks, and limits in light of objective examinations of their capabilities. Some of the uncertainties about AI do not have simple answers but, as set out in this presentation, there are opportunities to bring a clarity that has at times been lacking - and thus to realistically assess what changes AI may bring.
