Human-AI Cooperation to Tackle Misinformation

Speaker:  Damiano Spina – Melbourne, VIC, Australia
Topic(s):  Information Systems, Search, Information Retrieval, Database Systems, Data Mining, Data Science

Abstract

The unprecedented speed and scale at which misinformation spreads online have fueled a global information crisis. At the same time, rapid advances in generative Artificial Intelligence (AI), particularly foundation and large language models (LLMs), have enabled the creation of increasingly sophisticated and convincing false narratives, including deepfakes. Yet, these same technologies also offer new opportunities to strengthen our defenses against misinformation. In this lecture, I will explore both the challenges and the potential of computational approaches and human-AI collaboration to support fact-checkers in identifying and countering misinformation more effectively.
