Decolonizing Information Retrieval Research

Speaker:  Damiano Spina – Melbourne, VIC, Australia
Topic(s):  Information Systems, Search, Information Retrieval, Database Systems, Data Mining, Data Science

Abstract

The field of information retrieval, like much of computer science, has been shaped predominantly by Western-centric frameworks that influence how problems are defined, investigated, and addressed. In this lecture, I argue that many of the research challenges we face today could be better addressed by incorporating Indigenous perspectives and ways of knowing. I also outline practical steps towards decolonizing research practices, which involve not only broadening methodological approaches but also fostering culturally safe and inclusive environments where Indigenous knowledges are meaningfully valued. Such efforts can contribute to a richer and more socially responsive research landscape that benefits the scientific community as a whole.
