Abstract
Most studies of information seeking put the seeking activity at the center. In this talk, I present an alternative perspective: that of the person, who may be actively seeking, or may simply be encountering information on their travels through the information landscape. The information journey is a way of framing our understanding of both directed seeking and encountering. I locate that within an information landscape that includes physical and digital information resources, other people and environmental factors. The landscape changes as information resources are added and reconfigured. This perspective allows us to embrace information phenomena such as serendipity and meaning making as well as individual and collaborative information seeking within the same framework. It also supports thinking about design solutions to information challenges. The talk draws on studies of information interactions across a variety of contexts.
