An introduction to Human Factors for Health Technologies

This session introduces approaches to designing interactive healthcare technologies that are fit for purpose: that maximise efficiency, effectiveness and satisfaction for staff, and give the best possible patient experience. This extends from understanding clinical work, patient experience, and the requirements for new technologies, through design, implementation and deployment, through to checking that the resulting system works as intended.

I present an overview of the system development lifecycle and discuss methods for incorporating Human Factors throughout that lifecycle. Although many of the principles are general, applying to any kind of interactive system, I focus in this talk on the application of these general principles within the context of health technologies and health information systems, drawing on examples of systems designed for health and wellbeing.
