Art of Disruptive Research
Speaker: Sumit Gulwani – Redmond, WA, United StatesTopic(s): Human Computer Interaction , Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Computer Vision, Natural language processing , Software Engineering and Programming , Society and the Computing Profession
Abstract
Sumit’s research career, spanning more than 2 decades, has been filled with diverse experiences: from proving theorems to writing code and shipping features inside mass-market products, from being a researcher in programming languages community to being invited to give keynotes at software engineering, AI, and HCI conferences, from being an individual contributor to leading a team, from managing on-site work to management of remote geo-diverse teams, from orchestrating one-way technology transfer to co-evolving science and product through relentless telemetry-based iterations.
In this talk, Sumit will distill his life experiences into some key learnings that relate to problem selection, working with people with diverse expertise, and blended research and engineering. Sumit will weave together personal stories of inspiration from everyday life that you can relate to, especially from his late father who inspired Sumit’s identity as a computer scientist who connects ideas, people, and research with practice. This talk will inspire you to reflect on the “why”, “how”, and “what” of your work (and perhaps also spark your interest in the exciting research field of AI-assisted programming).
