Abstract

Within a living cell, a gene can either be expressed or not, akin to the digital on-off signalling familiar in electronic engineering. While there are of course numerous differences, this abstraction enables the effective design and implementation of genetic logic gates and circuits. This lecture covers the process of designing a Boolean function, such as a NOR logic gate, and its physical implementation using genetic material within a living cell. The presentation concludes by introducing alternative approaches to combinatorial logic that show greater promise for programming living systems.
